What is an NPI?
The National Provider Identifier, or NPI as it is commonly known, is a requirement of HIPPA. It is a ten-digit identifier required for all healthcare providers.
When can I apply for the NPI?
Providers may apply for their NPI now. We recommend you obtain your NPI at your earliest convenience.
How do I apply for the NPI?
You may apply for you NPI:
Online – via a web-based application at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov
or
Mail – request a paper application by calling 1-800-465-3203
When do I start sending my NPI?
Gateway EDI will begin accepting NPI’s in October of 2006 and plan to be HIPPA compliant with the NPI regulations by May 23, 2007. Most payers will still require your legacy provider number until May 23, 2007.
