The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 requires issuance of a unique national provider identifier (NPI) to each physician, supplier or other provider of health care. To comply with this requirement, CMS began to accept applications for, and to issue NPIs on May 23, 2005.

• If you don't have it, get it at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov
  
• If you haven't shared it, fax it to Gateway EDI at 866-203-4587
  
• If you aren't using it, call us to find out about including it on your claims
