Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
Gateway EDI & HIPAA
Gateway EDI has been closely monitoring the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 since its inception. We are assimilating HIPAA regulations into our corporate culture, making them one more element of our customer focus. That means we are constantly looking at HIPAA based on our customers’ needs.
NPI
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 requires issuance of a unique national provider identifier (NPI) to each physician, supplier or other provider of health care. To comply with this requirement, CMS began to accept applications for, and to issue NPIs on May 23, 2005.
NPI Overview: Get It. Share It. Use It.
CMS has developed a Training package on NPI that will assist providers with self-education, as well as education of staff. This package is also useful to national and local medical societies for group presentations and training. The entire package will consist of five modules: General Information, Electronic File Interchange (EFI), Subparts, Data Dissemination and Medicare Implementation. Each Module consists of a PowerPoint presentation (with speaker’s notes) and is designed to stand alone or can be combined with other Modules for a training session tailored to the particular audience. Modules will be posted to the CMS NPI web page as completed.
HIPAA Standard Transactions
HIPAA requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to adopt standards to support electronic exchange of administrative and financial health care transactions primarily between health care providers and plans. After looking at all the various transactions in place such as NSF, HHS selected the ANSI transaction set. ANSI is the American National Standards Institute. They provide standards for exchange of business information under the Accredited Standards Committee, ASC X12. X12 has a subcommittee for the insurance industry called ASC X12N. This committee is responsible for maintaining all insurance transaction formats.
